save a life

Well, Peter Petrelli tries to save the world. I can't save the world, so I think I'd just save lives. :)

For the past 4 days i've been attending a 4-day Standard First Aid Course at Singapore Red Cross Society. And its really quite enlightening, not to mention, empowering. Besides learning stuff like choking, burns, sprains, cramps, fractures, stings, bites, wounds, cardiac arrest, stroke, fits, heat stroke, bleeding, amputation, fainting, abdominal & chest thrust, bandaging, we were also taught basic CPR. (which explains the previous entry :) )

I found out stuff about our body which I never knew. We absorb 5 % of oxygen. Our heart is not on the left side, its in the middle, just tilted to the left. we have 206 bones in our body. Our brain cells start to die if it doesn't receive oxygen after 4 mins. We have about 5-6 litres of blood in our body. I always knew our body was quite fascinating (tho I never did study bio.. :P ), but now i realised how marvellously we have been created by God. =)

I dunnoe if i'd ever get to apply what I've learnt (hopefully never), but its really a good skill everyone should be equipped with. Even now, if students were to get injured during their camps, at least I know what's the proper procedure and what's the correct steps to take to ensure that they are ok. I mean, we never know when we'd meet someone who would need us to render some help, and being trained would be a value-add.

and learning first aid is to equip me as i try to take a small step towards achieving my dreams.

On another note, an ironic one, my tailbone (tip of my spine) has been causing me much pain of late. Yesterday was the worst so far. When I got home from my course, I couldn't sit on the sofa, or when I wanted to lie down, i couldn't rest the weight of my body on that part of my body, coz it would cause much pain and discomfort. I had difficulty squatting, bending, sitting and lying down.

So today, after my First Aid exam (of which i got full marks. hee) , i went down to Geylang Poly Clinic (one of the polyclinics in singapore that does x-ray). sigh...can someone remind me never to visit the doctor at the polyclinic unless i'm on the brink of death? I waited a total of 2 hrs there... and i was the second last patient to leave the polyclinic!!! seriously. All the other doctors and nurses have left, except me, the last patient, the doctor, the pharmacist and the security guard! Anyway, the doc was in a hurry to go home i suppose, coz she was like rushing thru' the consultation process. she declared that i was ok, just to work on my posture and do some exercises and prescribed me some painkillers (which I had already been taking the whole day to ease the pain...) Right..if it were that simple, why is it that painful?! especially for someone with a high threshold of pain, this is quite uncomfortable. I can't even sit properly!

Okie. so in the next few days if I'm rendered immobile. someone please sue the doctor.
