Counselling course

yday was the last class of my Certificate in Practical Counselling class. we got our certs and had a mini party.

I'm glad I finally got the opportunity to attend this course. Had been delaying it since the start of the year coz of other commitments. Learning about counselling framework such as PADI and CROPS, and learning about our teacher's experience at the Family Service Centre made me realise that a job that requires one to be in a helping relationship isn't easy at all. In fact, our teacher said something yday that brought home the message of what a counsellor does.

Someone asked her if there are times she feel exhausted or frustrated when hearing about her clients' problems, such as being in an abusive relationship or adultery, and she said, when a counsellor listen to her client, they hear not the problem, but they use their "third ear" to hear the strengths of the client, the resources the client can tap on, because a problem ceases to become a problem as long as the client is able to cope with it. Thus a counsellor's role is to help the client draw out these resources as a coping mechanism.

a problem ceases to be a problem as long as we can cope with it

how true.

Very often the trouble comes when people DONT REALISE they have a problem. That's the real problem.
